When tasked with writing this piece on vitality for Udaya I stumbled upon the above definition and I immediately thought, eureka! Vitality is indeed one of the motivating reasons I’ve practiced yoga now for over twenty years. I practice not necessarily to be stronger, leaner or more flexible, although I do appreciate all those inherent benefits of a long and serious practice. We practice to create a much more vital life force from which we can draw our energy to live a fuller, brighter, productive, and more energetic life.

The proof’s in the pudding so to speak. This scenario may sound familiar to you. It’s the end of the day and you’re dragging ass, all you want to do is go home and park it on the lazy boy in front of the tube with a glass of wine or tea because you feel just to drained to do anything else? However, at the last moment you become your own hero and rally and decide to click onto or go to your local yoga studio and get in your practice even if at the moment it may seem like a great deal of effort. However, you remember, you remember from experience that yoga does not consume energy, it transforms it. It takes you from lethargic, dull and heavy, to vital, light, bright and reborn in a sense, it’s the magic of yoga and it’s the magic of breath.

This vitality will become your calling card and people will be drawn to you like moths to a light. So remember, if you ever feel low on energy or even depressed a vital life force infusion is only your yoga mat and a few downdogs away and your future will be so bright you’ll have to wear sunglasses.
